The first evangelical minister in Ness was Finlay Cook who came in 1929. At the Disruption of 1843 the minister (John Finlayson) and the congregation came out, worshipping for three years in the open air. A church and manse were built in South Dell in 1846. The church in Cross was built in 1892. In 1900 the minister (Donald MacDonald) entered the Union, but in 1909 the remaining Free Church congregation were able to call Duncan MacDougall.
At the Reconstitution of 2000 the congregation was vacant. A minority of the congregation adhered to the reconstituted Free Church (continuing).
The congregation have now built a new church in North Dell. A manse on the same site has also recently been completed, (October 2009).

You can see North Dell in the middle of the map. If you pull the slide control on the left up to where the arrow is you will be able to see our new church clearly. Zooming out again will show you how to get there from Stornoway, the main town on the island.
