For many years the Outer Hebrides, in particular North Uist, Harris and Lewis, were seen as the last bastion of Sabbath Observance in the country. Yet due largely to the decline of the Gospel over recent years, that image is now shattered.

Once again Caledonian MacBrayne, operators of the island ferries, have pressed ahead with Sabbath day ferries, this time from the port of Tarbert, Harris. This was the last island port not to be taking paying passengers on the Lord’s Day.

The statement from the local Lord’s Day Observance Society is given in full below:

In the light of CalMac's announcement to begin Sabbath-breaking sailings from Tarbert, the local LDOS (DayOne) now call on the Transport Minister to investigate the manner of CalMac's Consultation. It is quite clear that across the Long Island, and especially in Harris, most people in the Community had little to no awareness that they were being 'consulted'. Given their past record at imposing such cultural changes no one should be surprised that CalMac have once again acted in such an unprofessional manner. They continue to ride roughshod over the express wish of the local authority, to ignore the representations of the local MSP, and to play games with a selective Consultation that seems so bland and banal that they may succeeded in giving misleading signals as to their real intentions throughout.

Where locals did object, they were simply told that their views had been noted. Pressed harder, then CalMac insisted repeatedly that they had no plans to introduce this service in the foreseeable future. CalMac have behaved in a shoddy manner towards this community once too often. It is time for their standards of behaviour to be investigated by the responsible Minister.

But none of this sadness can cover a basic point. Neither Harris nor Lewis cares about the Lord's Day as once it did. Long after the rest of the UK had given up keeping a special holy day, we still did. As such we were privileged and blessed. We were church-going, by and large, as a community. Almost all heard the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ. Families had a day together in peace. We all knew what it meant when someone was saved. Their life changed in front of our eyes. Many loved the Lord Jesus Christ, and so loved the Day that marked his resurrection. We were a witness to our whole land that Sunday was still special, still different, that God still required it to be kept holy. People knew about Sabbath on the island. No amount of complaining about CalMac can reverse that.

Until islanders, old and young, return to loving the Saviour, we will not have that love for his Day that makes all the difference. Nor can we expect that a profit-driven company will keep the Sabbath for us. CalMacs actions only break the shell that remained of what was once our great honour and blessing. Yet the day will surely come when the Lord's Day will be treasured here more than ever it was before.

Rev Greg MacDonald
Chairman, LDOS/Day One Lewis Branch
on behalf of the local branch
