Following the Disruption, the Free Church cause flourished in this part of Canada. In 1846 a Free Church congregation was formed in Smiths Falls under the name St Paul’s Presbyterian Church with the Rev William Aitken as minister. Included in the deputations sent by the Free Church in Scotland to North America was the Rev William Chalmers Burns, who preached in Smiths Falls as well as many other places throughout Canada.
Although the congregation maintained a vibrant witness for several years, a series of church unions within Canada in the latter part of the nineteenth century resulted in the loss of a Free Church testimony. Under the leadership of the Rev David Compton a new congregation was received into the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) in 2002.
